About

Six people, one mail server, no investors

We started Mailcedar because we wanted somewhere quiet to keep our email. It turned out other people wanted the same thing.

Mailcedar was started in 2022 in a top-floor office on Cordova Street in Vancouver. The three of us had been running our own mail servers for years and kept getting asked by friends and family if they could just use ours. Eventually we made it a real thing.

Three years and a few thousand customers later, we're still a small company. Six full-time people now, all in Vancouver except one in Sackville, NB. We rack our own hardware in Montréal, we answer our own support email, and we have no investors to please.

How we make decisions

If we have to choose between adding a feature that would make a marketer jealous and one that would make a customer's day quietly better, we always pick the second one. The corollary is that we are sometimes very late to fashionable things. We didn't add an AI summarizer because none of us would use one. We don't show "smart" replies. We don't try to "boost engagement."

We also try to make every product decision in public. Big changes are announced on the blog with a comment thread for users. Small ones go into the weekly changelog. If you've ever wondered why some specific thing about your account works the way it does, the answer is probably in there somewhere.

The people

We are:

Working at Mailcedar

We hire about one person every nine months and have a hard cap of fifteen, ever. That's deliberate. We don't post listings; we hire people we've worked with before or who reach out and demonstrate they know what kind of company this is.

If that sounds like you, write us at hiring@mailcedar.com. Tell us about your last technical project and what you'd want to spend a year on if it were up to you.

Press & mentions

We've been written about a few places. We don't pursue press but we'll talk to people who want to ask serious questions about email or independent software businesses.

For press requests: press@mailcedar.com. Logo and brand assets at press-kit.zip.

Get in touch

The fastest way to reach us is hello@mailcedar.com. For account-specific things we ask you to email from the address in question.
